Jib Track Setup Clarification

published 05/26/2020

The ODTC and IGC have previously issued interpretive rulings regarding deck recesses and specific limits on their size and placement to comply with Class Rules C.7.1(d), D.2.3(a) and D.2.3(b). As the Class is currently trending towards more inboard jib sheeting, the ODTC wishes to advise the Class Membership of its position with respect to this issue to avoid future conflicts.

The One Design Technical Committee (ODTC) and Etchells International Governing Council (IGC) have previously issued interpretive rulings regarding deck recesses and specific limits on their size and placement to comply with Class Rules C.7.1(d), D.2.3(a) and D.2.3(b).  As the Class is currently trending towards more inboard jib sheeting, the ODTC wishes to advise the Class Membership of its position with respect to this issue to avoid future conflicts.

The ODTC has reported to the IGC and Chief Measurer that it considers deck recesses, such as those found on production Etchells built during the year 2016, to be acceptable provided that they comply with CR C.7.1(d) and that the jib tack and jib lead fittings remain fully outside the moulded deck and cuddy cabin profiles. However, if an Owner or Builder is considering the installation of any alternative or additional deck recess configurations, then it is recommended that the specifications of each recess be submitted to the Class for prior review and written approval in advance of making such alterations to an Etchells deck or deck mould. Note that failure to obtain such prior written approval could possibly result in the yacht having its measurement certificate withheld.

The reason for this recommendation is to maintain consistent jib sheeting potential on all Etchells, in accordance with the one design principles of the Class and CR D.2.6(d), and provide competitive racing across the fleet.
