The Triad team of John Bertrand, Andrew Palfrey and Grant Simmer continued their dominance of the Australian Etchells Championship today, winning their second consecutive race.

It seems there is a lot of attention paid by all sailors at the 2013-14 Etchells Australian Championship to getting a bullet. Now whilst only one crew will achieve that particular prize, it would seem that all sailors are getting something very much just as valuable, if not as immediately identifiable – knowledge wrapped up in a blanket of good times.

The Australian Etchells class National Championship started today in shifty, soft conditions, on the offshore waters of Queensland’s Gold Coast. The six-time national champion, world champion, Olympian and America’s cup helmsman, John Bertrand, called today’s racing fabulous; not just once, but several times.

Etchells Nationals – dark horse Bradford knows how to time his run

A short break in the Black Jack big boat program is affording Mark Bradford the chance to slip down to Queensland’s Gold Coast to compete in next week’s Etchells National Championship. Some of his fellow Etchells competitors consider Bradford will be the dark horse to watch during the championship. He has recruited to his team two of his long-standing sailing mates - Olympic and America’s Cup level sailors Anthony Nossiter and Will McCarthy. Both have sailed with Bradford on his big boat campaigns; on Loyal when it won the 2011 Sydney Hobart Race and again in that race last year aboard the Reichel Pugh 66 Black Jack.

Timothea “Timmy” Larr honored

Etchells Class life member, Timmy Larr was recently inducted to the National (USA) Sailing Hall of Fame. She noted her two Etchells North American Championship wins as her most important wins. See her full bio for more details. Congratulations, Timmy!

Last Voyage - Thomas C. Piper

It is with heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of Thomas C. Piper. Tom left us on the morning of September 9, 2013. We remember him as a formidable competitor in many regattas both offshore and around the buoys.

Etchells at Cowes Week 2013

You know it's been a tight regatta when 4 boats enter the last race with a chance of winning overall. You know its been a tight final race when 5 boats led at one stage or another and all 4 of the overall leaders were at one time in regatta winning positions and its not until half way up the last beat that the winners can start grinning. So it was with the Etchell class at Cowes Week 2013, one design keel boat racing at its very best. As important for the class was the fact that of the 8 sailors crewing the top 2 boats on the last morning, 7 were under 25 and on the next two boats women had been integral members of the crew throughout the week. 18 entries also made this a strong showing from one of the Solents most competitive one-design fleets.

Proposed Updated Association Rules for Review

Hong Kong Stays True to Form

Hong Kong weather was true to form for winter during the first two months of 2013. We have had some excellent racing days in the Harbour with steady breeze, blue skies and warm temperatures. The fleet continues to expand with newcomers and close, competitive racing has meant some series final results have been tight.
