US National Sailing Hall of Fame Class Includes Robbie Doyle

The U.S. National Sailing Hall of Fame selected ten people in 2019 to join the 71 previously-recognized individuals who have been enshrined since the first class in 2011. Among this group to be inducted on November 9 is Sailmaker Robbie Doyle (Marblehead, Mass.).

Robbie Doyle grew up sailing in Marblehead, MA. and credits many sailing mentors for his accomplishments including; Ted Hood, Jon Wales, Dr. Jerry Milgram, Dave Smith and his older brother, Richard.

Eight Bells: Bubbles Shattuck

The world of sailing, and the world in general, lost one of its great ones with the passing of Robert F. (Bubbles) Shattuck of Oxford, MD on October 4, 2019.

Robert was born on Valentine’s Day (fittingly) in 1937 to Wilfred C. Shattuck and Julia Emma Salas Shattuck. He and his sister, the late Beatrice Shattuck Bissell, grew up in Old Greenwich, CT. He was educated at Kent School (Kent, CT) and at Colby College (Waterville, ME).

2019 Etchells U.S. National Championship at American Yacht Club

The Etchells U.S. National Championship hosted by American Yacht Club kicked off on Friday, September 13th with over 75 competitors from across the U.S. that included several World Champions and Olympians.

The International Etchells South Coast Championship 2019

Over the weekend 26/27th July, the 2019 Etchells South Coast Championships were held in Cowes and organised by the Royal Thames Yacht Club

Saturday morning’s racing started in a 12 to 14 knot breeze from the north and, while it was forecast to increase, that didn’t happen. Unfortunately as the wind was shifting so much, it took 45 minutes before the first start could actually happen, as the committee struggled to lay a fair line.

Etchells Worlds 2021 Announcement

The Cowes Etchells fleet is pleased to announce that the Royal Yacht Squadron will host the International Etchells World Championship in 2021. Over 70 boats from the UK and overseas are expected to compete including a youth challenge from the UK, USA and Australia.

2019 Etchells European Championship

The International Etchells European Championship was hosted by the Royal London Yacht Club and took place over three days on the Solent. 17 boats entered including 4 youth boats and 7 Corinthian boats.

2019 International Etchells Saida Cup – 7th-8th June 2019

Saturday of this year’s Saida Cup, hosted by the Royal Thames Yacht Club, was cancelled as the tail end of a front brought strong winds to the Solent. The race committee sensibly made the decision to cancel Saturday’s racing on Friday, which gave competitors the chance to prepare for Sunday’s early start.

International Etchells Cowes Fleet Sir Kenneth Preston Regatta

This weekend saw the 25th year of the Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy; in memory of the retired Vice Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron and captain of the 1960 British Olympic sailing team. Previous notable recipients of the prize (and who feature on the plaque in the Squadron) are Stuart Childerley and three times winner Laurence Mead.

This year’s event saw fourteen Etchells entered, and three youth teams. This is in keeping with Sir Kenneth Preston's personal aim to support young sailors.
